128 questions and answers on using AIROnline.
What AIROnline is, what it covers and what is new.
AIROnline is the online legal research service of All India Reporter. You can search Supreme Court and High Court judgments, read headnotes, look up citations, read Bare Acts and Central and State statutes, and read legal articles. You can also ask a plain-language question in AI Search and read AIR articles and selected e-Books. It works in a browser and on the AIROnline mobile app (Android and iOS).
That depends on your plan. The Professional Online plan covers:
The court-wise plans cover the Supreme Court and one or two named High Courts. See "What plans are available?" under Subscription and Renewal.
The new AIROnline at aironline.in works on subscription plans. Instead of activating a Registration or Recharge Coupon, you choose a plan, enter your details and pay online. The new site also has AI Search, a new design and mobile apps. The old site is still reachable from the "Switch to old AIROnline" button in the top bar of the new site.
Signing in and finding your way around the home screen.
You need your AIROnline sign-in and an active subscription. You also need a recent browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox) and a normal broadband or mobile connection. What you can open depends on the Courts covered under your plan.
Any recent version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox will work well. If a page behaves oddly, update your browser and try again.
You land on the home screen. The big Free Text Search box sits in the middle. Below it are the search tiles. The top bar has User Data, Online Subscriptions, AIR Shop, EBooks and Support.
Each tile opens a different tool.
| Tile | What it is for |
|---|---|
| AI Search | Ask a question in plain words |
| Citation Search | Open a case from its report, year and page |
| Judgement Update | See the newest judgments of a court |
| Nominal Search | Find a case from the names of the parties |
| Acts & Section Search | Start from an Act and section, then see the cases on it |
| Articles Search | Find AIR articles by subject, title, author or keyword |
| Statutes Central/State | Read the text of Central and State Acts |
| Pay As You Use | Pay-per-use access. See "What is Pay As You Use?" |
| Browse More | Search by judgment date, bench strength, court, judge or lawyer |
Tip: Once you are on any of these pages, use the dark menu on the left to jump to another search. You do not have to go back to the home page each time.
There are two ways. On the home screen, scroll down to Updates From Supreme Court. Click the Updates From High Courts tab to see the newest High Court judgments instead. Or click the Judgement Update tile, choose a court under Select Court, and scroll through the newest judgments of that court. Each one shows the citation, the judges, the date and a short note on the point decided. Click a case to open it.
Tip: Check 'Updates From Supreme Court' each morning. It is the quickest way to see what was decided last week.
It opens the earlier version of the site. Most users will not need it. You can still reach the old site from this button in the top bar of the new site.
Sign out when you finish, so that no one else can use your account, searches or saved cases. Use a recent browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox). A normal broadband or mobile connection is enough.
Signing in and getting back into your account.
Open aironline.in, click Login in the top bar and enter your username and password. You can also sign in with a one-time password (OTP), on the website and on the mobile app.
If you cannot reset it yourself, call +91 83800 05660 or write to support@aironline.in.
Call +91 83800 05660 or write to support@aironline.in with your name and the mobile number you used when you bought your plan. We will help you recover your login.
The fastest way to find cases on a point of law or a set of facts.
After you sign in:
Start broad, look at the first few results, then add one word to narrow it. Very long searches often return fewer useful cases.
Yes. You can type facts, a section number, a party name or a legal idea. For example: notice served on mother of accused under Section 138.
Fewer than you think. Start broad, look at the first few results, then add one more word to narrow them. Searches with too many words often bring back fewer useful cases.
It finds only pages that contain your words together, in the same order. Use it when you remember a line from a judgment.
It finds pages where your words appear close to each other, not necessarily side by side. Use it when Exact Phrase finds too little and a plain search finds too much.
AIROnline finds pages that match your words anywhere. This is good when you are exploring a topic.
Type the line in the search box and tick Exact Phrase before you search.
Tip: Use a few distinctive words, not the whole sentence. One word out of place can lose the match.
Click the History button next to the search box on the home screen to see your recent searches, then click one to run it again. The full list is under User Data, in My Search History.
Use the words a headnote would use. 'Dishonour of cheque' finds more than 'cheque bounce'.
Tip: Think like a headnote writer. Use legal terms, not everyday phrases.
Reading the results page and narrowing a long list.
It shows how many cases matched and how long the search took. Your search words are highlighted in yellow inside every result card. Each card shows the citation, court, judges, parties, case number, date and the headnote lines that matched.
Click a filter heading such as Courts. A list opens under it. Tick the choices you want and the results refresh. You can filter by judge, court, bench, year, case result, party and database.
Tip: Each filter list has a small search box. Use it to find a long name quickly.
Use the filters panel on the left:
You can also filter by judge, bench, party and database. If you get hundreds of thousands of results, filter by Court first and then by Year. Two clicks usually gets you to a readable list.
Use the Search again box at the top of the results page. You can tick All Words, Exact Phrase or Proximity there. Your current search shows as a chip. Click the small x on the chip to clear it.
Click the small x on your search chip. The chip shows what you searched for.
No. Results are listed in the order the system ranks them. The newest or highest-court case is not always at the top.
Tip: Scan the whole first page and read the headnote lines under each card before you pick a case.
They let you open the case or bookmark it. Hover your mouse over an icon to see its name.
Try these, one at a time:
Using the toolbar at the top of every judgment.
Click its result card. The judgment opens in a new tab, so your results stay where you left them. Under the toolbar you will see the citation, court, judges, case number, date and parties, then the headnotes with paragraph numbers, then the judgment text. If it does not open, your browser may have blocked the new tab. Allow pop-ups for the site and click again.
Select Language, Website Font, A-/A/A+, Download PDF, Print, Copy, Bookmark, Equal Citation and AI Insights.
Use A- for smaller, A for normal and A+ for larger text on the toolbar. Website Font changes the font style.
Click Download PDF on the toolbar. A small menu opens. Choose 'Save as PDF' to save the judgment on your device. There is a fair limit on downloads. If downloads go beyond the prescribed limit, the account is blocked automatically.
Tip: Download only the judgments you need, so that you stay within the limit.
It is in the Download PDF menu. It opens the judgment in the print-style layout of the AIR reports.
Click Print on the toolbar.
Select the text and click Copy on the toolbar. Then paste it into your notes or document.
Yes. Click Select Language to translate the page with the built-in translator. Machine translation can be wrong.
Tip: Always keep the English text for anything you will quote in court.
It shows the other citations for the same judgment, where they are available. It is useful when an opponent cites a different report.
Read the headnote first. Then go to the paragraph numbers it points to. Blue links, such as the Act and section at the start, take you to related material.
It saves the case to your own list. You can find it later under User Data, in My Bookmarks.
A short, issue-by-issue summary of a judgment.
It is a quick summary of a judgment, one issue at a time. It helps you decide whether a long judgment is worth reading in full.
Open any judgment and click AI Insights at the top right of the toolbar. A panel slides in on the right. Scroll through it one issue at a time. Click the small arrow at the top of the panel to close it.
Each issue shows a summary, the relevant facts, the questions and the findings. Paragraph numbers are given in square brackets, such as [Paras 33-35].
No. A machine writes AI Insights to help you read faster. It does not replace the judgment. Open the paragraphs it points to before you rely on a point.
Citation, Judgement Update, Nominal, Acts and Section, Articles, Statutes, Pay As You Use and Browse More.
Use the Citation Search tile:
Tip: Fill in only what you know. A year and a page number alone can be enough.
Use it when you already know the report and the page, for example from an opponent's list of authorities.
It is the 'what was decided lately' page. Select a court and you see its newest judgments, each with the citation, the judges and a short note on the point decided. Scroll down for older ones. 'D/' means the date of decision.
Use the Nominal Search tile:
Tip: Type just one distinctive word, such as a surname. A short name finds more than a long one. Narrow by court afterwards.
Use the Acts & Section Search tile:
You most likely typed the Act's name but did not pick it. Click the Act from the suggestion list under the box. Then fill in the section and search again.
Yes. Click the + button to add another Act and section. You will see cases that cover both.
Click the Articles Search tile. Type a subject in the Search Content box, or use the filters for Article Title, Article Author or Article Keywords. Each card shows the title, the author and the year of the AIR volume. Click a card to read it.
Click Statutes Central/State, type the Act's name in the Search Statutes box (for example "Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita") and pick it from the list. The Act opens on its own page with the full text. Use Find text to jump to a word inside the Act, and the arrows to move to the next or previous match.
Yes. Open the Act, for example 'Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita'. The new criminal codes show a Corresponding Section note under each section, such as 'S. 38 of Indian Penal Code, 1860'. It works the other way too. Some sections also show 'Object and Reason' from the Bill.
Use 'Find text' on the Act page. Type the word to jump to it. The two arrows move to the previous or next match.
Browse More opens big tiles for more searches: Citation Search, Nominal Search, Judgment Date, Bench Strength, Court Search, Judges Search and Lawyer Search.
Click Browse More and pick a tile: Judgment Date, Bench Strength, Court Search, Judges Search or Lawyer Search (cases in which a particular lawyer appeared). Fill in what you know and click Search.
Use the dark menu on the left of any tool page. It lets you jump to another search in one click.
Pay As You Use is a tile on the AIROnline home page, shown beside the other tools. If you want to download a specific judgment or citation, you can do so by paying Rs. 100 per judgment, without taking any subscription plan. The amount includes GST. You pay it online through the payment gateway.
Ask a question in plain words and get matching judgments.
Use AI Search when you know your question or facts but not the right keywords. It reads the meaning of your words and fetches matching headnotes, judgments and precedents from the AIR database.
Tip: Use AI Search for questions. Use the normal search box for keywords, section numbers and names.
Click the AI icon in the home search box, or the AI Search tile. It opens on its own page, called AIR AI, in a new tab. Stay in that tab.
Write one clear question, or the facts of your case. Mention the Act and section if you know them. Say who did what in a few words. For example: Is a Section 138 NI Act demand notice valid if it was served on the accused's mother?
Tip: One question at a time works best.
A search took about 26 seconds in our test, but results can take longer to appear. A status line near the bottom reads 'Searching linked cases' while it works. Please wait.
AI Search rewrites your question into several versions to look at the point from different angles. Query #1 is your own question. #2, #3 and #4 are the rewritten ones. Click the pencil on any query to edit it if it has drifted from what you meant.
Top Results shows the best matches from all courts. Supreme Court Results shows only Supreme Court judgments. Results by Query shows the results for each rewritten question. AIR Articles shows AIR articles on the subject.
It shows how close a case is to your question. It does not tell you which case is best. Several results can show the same number, and the same case can appear more than once.
Tip: Open the judgment, read the paragraph and check the later history yourself.
AI Search helps you find cases. It does not replace reading them. Open the judgment, read the paragraph itself, and check the case's later history before you cite it in court.
Click Filters. Pick a Court, a Bench Type, or a From Year and To Year. Then click Apply Filters.
View Judgment opens the judgment. Cited Precedents lists the cases it relied on, with a label such as Reversed, Per incuriam or Relied on. Add to Library saves the case to your AI Search library.
Click 'View Full Head-Note' on the card to read more than the first lines.
Click My Library in the top menu of the AI Search page. It stays empty until you save your first case.
Tip: My Library (AI Search) is separate from My Bookmarks (User Data).
Yes. Click the pencil next to your question, change it and run it again. Click the x to close the results and start over.
Open the User Data menu in the top bar to reach your personal space.
Open the judgment and click Bookmark on the toolbar. Find it again under User Data in the top bar, in My Bookmarks.
It has eight sections: My Bookmarks, My Saved Search, My Saved Notes, My Topics, My Case Research, My Mail Box, My Search History and My Profile.
It holds the cases you saved. Open a judgment, click Bookmark on the toolbar, and the case appears here.
Tip: Bookmark a case the moment you find it. It is faster than searching again.
My Topics is your own topics list. You can save any of the citations you searched under a topic. From the Digest View:
You can view it later in the User Data menu, under My Topics.
My Case Research holds your Case Research folders. You can add a case to a folder from the Digest View:
You can view it later in the User Data menu, under My Case Research.

Tip: Your current plan is the coupon marked Activated. Its Coupon Expiry Date is the date your plan ends.
The list shows all the coupons on your account, old and current. Expired ones stay in the list as a record. They do not affect your current plan.

Small habits that save time.
Here is a quick chart. Keep it handy.
| Area | Tip or trick |
|---|---|
| Search words | Use the words a headnote would use. "Dishonour of cheque" finds more than "cheque bounce". |
| Search length | Start broad, look at the first few results, then add one word to narrow. Very long searches often return fewer useful cases. |
| Exact lines | Use Exact Phrase for a line you remember from a judgment. Try Proximity Search if Exact Phrase finds too little. |
| Long lists | Filter by Court first, then by Year. You will usually reach a readable list in two clicks. |
| Results | Look at more than the first result. Read the headnote lines under each card before you open a case. |
| Which search box | Use AI Search for questions. Use the normal search box for keywords, section numbers and names. |
| Daily habit | Check Updates From Supreme Court each morning to see what was decided lately. |
| Citation Search | Fill in only what you know. A year and a page number alone can be enough. |
| Nominal Search | Type just one distinctive word, such as a surname. Narrow by court afterwards. |
| Acts & Section Search | Click the Act from the suggestion list. Typing the name is not enough. |
| Moving around | Use the dark menu on the left to jump to another search without going back to the home page. |
| Repeat a search | Use the History button next to the search box instead of typing again. |
| AI Search questions | Ask one question at a time. Mention the Act and section, and say in a few words who did what. |
| AI Search queries | If a rewritten query has drifted from what you meant, click its pencil and edit it. |
| Match percentage | It shows closeness to your question, not which case is best. Read the judgment before you pick. |
| Reading a judgment | Read the headnote first. Then go to the paragraph numbers it points to. |
| Quoting | Keep the English text for anything you will quote. Machine translation can be wrong. |
| AI Insights | Use it to decide if a long judgment is worth reading. Open the paragraphs it points to before you rely on a point. |
| Other citations | Click Equal Citation to see other citations for the same judgment. |
| Saving | Bookmark a case to find it again. Use Save as PDF for a copy. |
| Phone or tablet | Turn the phone to landscape if toolbar buttons are missing. Close tabs you no longer need. |
| Shared computer | Sign out when you finish. |
| Before you cite | Read the paragraph in the judgment itself. Check that the case is still good law. |
Start broad and add one word at a time. Use the words a headnote would use. Use Exact Phrase for a line you remember. Use Court and Year filters to shrink long lists. Look at more than the first result.
Yes, and it works well. Use AI Search to find the right idea and the right cases. Then use the normal search box to look up the section number, party name or a phrase from those cases.
Find the case, open AI Insights for a quick read, then read the headnote and the paragraphs it points to. Use Equal Citation for other report numbers. Bookmark it and save a PDF copy.
Use Citation Search. Pick the report, year and page, and click Search. Use the dark menu on the left to stay in the tool without going back to the home screen.
