Designer Drugs : Legal Response

The objects and reasons of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, reveals the concern with which the Parliament of India has enacted the law against drug menace. When compared to erstwhile laws1, elaborate measures have been provided by incorporating the wide enforcement network to effectively combat the evil of drugs abuse. With a view to check the proliferation of varied number of drugs (both agro based and narcotic) and psychotropic substastances, detailed schedules have been appended to the Act enumerating the prohibited drugs.
While keeping pace with the substantial proliferation, the schedules need to be amended frequently by including new psycho-tropic substances. Otherwise, under the very nose of legal fram work, the violation takes place resulting deleterious effects. One such threat is being posed by "designer Drugs."
In the early 1980's a new type of compound known as 'Fentanyls' came to conquer the field of narcotic analgesics ....
