The Relevancy of Separate Electorates

An electorate is the group of qualified voters within a particular country, or area or for a particular election. The system of separate electorate means that, the community to which the electorate belongs would elect their leaders through an election in which the candidates and voters, limited to their community, are allowed to contest and vote respectively.1 The separation of the electorate is based upon some factors, such as religion, caste, occupation, sex etc. The demand for a separate electorate is usually made by minority groups who are apprehensive regarding fair representation.
The system of separate electorate has ceased to exist in India, however, the reservation system presently followed, can said to be a tweaked form of the former, with certain modifications.
