India has a pyramidal judicial system and at the apex of this pyramid is 'The Supreme Court of India'. A chronicle of the top court leads to the Victorian Era. The promulgation of Regulating Act, 1773 by the King of England paved the way for establishment of the Supreme Court of Judicature at Calcutta in 1774, followed by the Supreme Courts at Madras and Bombay in 1800 and 1823 respectively. The India High Courts Act, 1861 established High Courts for various provinces and abolished the Supreme Courts at Calcutta, Madras and Bombay and also the Sadar Adalats inPresidency towns. These High Courts had the distinction of being the highest Courts in India till the creation of Federal Court of India.
